What are IP44 Lights?

When it comes to lighting your bathroom, it’s important to ensure that all light fittings are IP44 or above, depending on where they are being placed in the bathroom. The characters IP, stand for ‘Ingression Protection’ and are always followed by two numbers that denote the level of protection it provides against exposure water, steam and dust – the higher the number the higher the level of protection.

IP44 is the most commonly used for bathroom lighting, but before you deck your bathroom out in all IP44 bathroom lights, you need to consider the specific ‘zones’ to ensure you have the safest and best level of protection.

Where Should I use IP44 Lights?

If you’re installing bathroom lights, you need to factor in the 4 distinctive zones – 0, 1, 2 and 3. Zone 0 is an area inside a bath or shower where the light will be submerged underwater, which requires at least and IP67 rated 12V SELV (safety extra low voltage) light fitting.

Zone 1 refers to the area above the bath and within a shower cubicle, but can also cover the wash basin area too and should always be installed with at least IP44 spotlights or an IP44 bathroom light, and in some cases an IP65 light if there is a higher risk of contact with water.

As with Zone 1, Zone 2 should also use IP44 lights and covers the areas 0.6 metres outside of the shower and bath zone. While Zone 3 is any other area outside of the specified zones and doesn’t require IP44 lights. Although it is still recommended to use IP44 lights in this areas for added safety and aesthetics.

Whilst bathrooms are the most common place for using IP44 lights, they can also be used for outdoor lighting where there will be exposure to water, damp and dust, as well as for kitchen lighting above sinks as they’re water splash protected. However, the IP44 spotlight, wall light and flush lights aren’t limited to areas with increased exposure to water, as they also work perfectly well as ceiling lights for hallways and other areas in the home or commercial premises.

The Benefits of IP44 Lights

There are numerous benefits of using IP44 bathroom lights to illuminate your living space, as you can create versatile lighting in specific areas. With the use of an IP44 spotlight or flush light, like the Circular Flush Fitting, you can have lighting in different zones in your bathroom to give you the light where you need it the most. Plus, if you team it with decorative IP44 wall lights, such as the Bathroom Wall Light IP44 you can have even more flexibility to alter the lighting to suit your mood or give added light over the sink.

If energy efficiency is another factor in your design, at Franklite, you’ll find a selection of IP44 LED lighting options, like the IP44 LED 2 Light Wall Bracket that gives you safety, style and excellent energy efficiency too.

With Franklite IP44 bathroom lights you’re sure to find exceptional quality, choice and safety to illuminate your bathroom into a warm and welcoming space to enjoy.
