The crystal chandelier has long held an appeal for its beautiful appearance and ability to enhance the light source by bouncing it off faceted cut glass elements. Perhaps the best known style is the Maria Theresa, named after the Empress of Austria and dating from around 1743.

There have always been many styles and sizes of crystal chandelier and most are available today which aids their popularity. An example of a very large crystal chandelier (in fact, the largest Bohemian Chandelier in the world) is located in the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, which was a gift from Queen Victoria. It has 750 lamps and weighs 4.5 tons. The palace also has the largest collection of Bohemian and Baccarat crystal chandeliers in the world. Whilst it is possible to find genuine antique crystal chandeliers, mostly from the early 20th century, the designs have not changed a great deal and a modern ‘period style’ fitting may be a safer alternative.

Small crystal chandeliers are becoming more popular now with ceiling heights getting lower and, while it may not be possible to have a traditional design without a chain suspension, they can still be very attractive and illuminate beautifully. Large chandeliers look impressive but the load on the ceiling joists should be considered before placing an order for one - always check the built weight of the fitting and the strength of your mounting point.

Modern crystal chandeliers such as the Valentina range offered by Franklite, tend to be a little less ‘fussy’ with clean, angle cut glass rather than multi-faceted crystal drops and make perfect bedroom lights. Another option is to choose a contemporary glass style Murano chandelier which would be a less ‘sparkly’ but equally as stunning alternative to crystal. The Natura pendant from Franklite is the perfect example, and we also offer a range of Chandeliers suitable for the bathroom.

Contemporary lighting designs can also incorporate crystal chandeliers and can be fitted with coloured LEDs which can illuminate the entire fitting turning the clear crystal drops into a myriad of beautiful colour.

Once the decision has been made to own a crystal chandelier, take a little time to contemplate the size, style and quality required – after all it should last a lifetime! Although other types are available, such as brass and LED chandeliers. Franklite are a leading Chandelier Manufacturer in the UK. Contact us today for more information on the Chandeliers we supply.
